Freedom of Information Requests

Today we sent Freedom of Information (FOIA) requests to the home institutions of several prominent global warming skeptics.  The request letters were sent to various state governors’ offices and state universities, as well as to the Smithsonian Institute, seeking information on scientists who are employees or former employees of these institutions.

The FOIA filings request a listing of all grants in support of research, copies of conflict of interest and outside income disclosures, copies of all email sent and received, and copies of CVs on file with the institutions.

Several of these individuals have been very vocal commentators over the past month in response to the story of the stolen or hacked email from the Climate Research Unit of the University of East Anglia.  Other individuals are the subject of emails within the stolen CRU cache.

We at PolluterWatch believe in transparency and freedom of information and think it is only fair that the public get an equal viewing of the email from the other side of the coin.

Earth to John Christy: Misleading for free is wrong, too.

On December 9, 2009, John Christy (University of Alabama-Huntsville) and Gavin Schmidt (NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies) appeared on CNN. Wolf Blitzer asked Christy if he takes money from oil companies.

Christy: "I do not take any money from oil companies, energy companies or any of those."

Let’s take as a given that Christy is not, in fact, on the payroll of Exxon-Mobil or any other energy company. That’s not the point. Since when did “not-deceiving-for-money” become the standard? “Misleading-for-free” is not the middle ground, flanked by deceiving-for-money on one side and truth on the other.


And, as shown below, Christy was definitely being misleading in the CNN interview.

Early on in the interview, Schmidt talked about the human role in climate change. In responding, Christy contributed this gem:

Christy: “[W]hat is being referred to here is being assumed from climate models”

Christy appeared to be saying that the attribution of most of the recent warming to human greenhouse gases is an “assumption” “from” “climate models.”

CHRISTY WAS WRONG

Climate scientists do not “assume” that humans are warming up the planet “from models,” as Christy claimed. Schmidt corrected Christy:

Schmidt:  “Climate models are a tool; they allow us to understand why climate changed in the past, why it’s changing now, and what that might mean for the future…they provide us with very good evidence that what we’re seeing now is in fact caused by the things that we know we are doing to the atmosphere.”

Scientists make assumptions in the course of their investigations. The results of these investigations are not called “assumptions.” They are called “results.” Obviously, Christy knows this. So, why did he call the results “assumptions”?

Christy goes on:  “I am underwhelmed…with what we see in the ability of climate models to prove anything, they really can’t prove anything.”

CHRISTY TRIED TO FAKE US OUT

Duh. Wrong classroom, Professor Christy. Proofs happen in math and logic, not science. You know this, so why the fake complaint about being “underwhelmed”?

When Blitzer turned to the materials recently stolen from climate scientists at University of East Anglia, Christy insisted that even some of the wildest misinterpretations of the stolen materials are actually fair representations.

Christy: “When they say [in the emails] ‘hide the decline’ that’s exactly what they were trying to do; it even is in the computer code.”

WHAT CHRISTY SAID WAS STUNNINGLY MISLEADING

I don’t think anyone really needs to hear once more why Sarah Palin and friends are wrong in thinking “the decline” in question was a decline in global temperatures and wrong in thinking that anything was actually being hidden.

If you haven’t heard the one about the “decline-hiding” being “in the computer code,” and you want to know what that’s all about, try this.

Schmidt’s on-show response pretty much sums up the whole shebang.

Schmidt:  “That’s completely wrong, John. That’s not true.”

Christy probably did get one thing right, though. He is probably right about why he is intent on being wrong and misleading.

Christy:  “As someone who was derided in many of those emails, I just completely disagree with what Gavin has just said.”

So, that’s why he’s disagreeing! He didn’t like what they had written about him! Has there ever been a clearer statement by any contrarian?
“I don’t like you; you make me feel bad, so I’m going to disagree with you, truth be damned.”
I don’t know to what extent Christy was derided in the emails. But if you want to know why anyone who worries about climate change might say something unflattering about Christy, this Climate Progress post from last year sums it up.

Joe Romm asks: Should you believe anything John Christy says?:
[Christy was] wrong — dead wrong — for a very long time, which created one of the most enduring denier myths, that the satellite data didn’t show the global warming that the surface temperature data did. As RealClimate [a climate science website co-founded by Schmidt] wrote [quoted by Romm]:
We now know, of course, that the satellite data set confirms that the climate is warming , and indeed at very nearly the same rate as indicated by the surface temperature records. Now, there’s nothing wrong with making mistakes when pursuing an innovative observational method, but Spencer [Christy's co-author on many papers; Spencer is/was also paid to write for an Exxon Mobil-funded website] and Christy sat by for most of a decade allowing — indeed encouraging — the use of their data set as an icon for global warming skeptics. They committed serial errors in the data analysis, but insisted they were right and models and thermometers were wrong. They did little or nothing to root out possible sources of errors, and left it to others to clean up the mess, as has now been done.

The link is to a post by Roy Spencer on WUWT. It’s a followup to a previous post in which he says:

The long-term increases in carbon dioxide concentration that have been observed at Mauna Loa since 1958 could be driven more than by the ocean than by mankind’s burning of fossil fuels.

Zervos and Steckis don’t provide any data or analysis, but Spencer does.

He begins by plotting the \delta13C data for Mauna Loa:

When I plot the same data, using the same axis limits as Spencer, I get a very similar graph:

The ratio R of 13C atoms to 12C atoms can be computed, given the \delta value:

n_{13} / n_{12} = R = R_0 (1 + \delta).

where R_0 is a reference value, which for 13C is the VPDB standard, 0.0112372. If we also know the total number n of carbon atoms in CO2 (which is given by the CO2 concentration, something most of us are familiar with), we can compute the number of 13C atoms in CO2

n_{13} = n R / (1+R).

This is essentially the amount of atmospheric 13CO2. I’ve ignored 14C atoms, but they’re only one in a trillion of all carbon atoms. One last note: the \delta value is generally given in “permil” which is “parts per thousand,” so when the value is given as -8 permil (about the average value at Mauna Loa) in terms of simple numbers that’s -0.008.

Putting it all together we can compute the amount of 13CO2 in the atmosphere as measured at Mauna Loa. Spencer does so, and plots it thus:

What’s up with that? It’s pretty clear that instead of computing nR/(1+R), Spencer just computed nR. Oh well, it doesn’t have a big impact on the analysis. Here’s a better plot of atmospheric 13CO2 at Mauna Loa:

Now Spencer estimates the time rate of change of CO2 concentration, and of 13CO2 concentration; these are d(CO2)/dt and d(13CO2)/dt. He doesn’t give enough specifics about exactly how he does this to reproduce his calculation, but it really won’t matter for what follows. Next he shows a scatterplot of d(13CO2)/dt against d(CO2)/dt and fits a trend line to that data:

He notes that the slope of this trend line supports the anthropogenic origin of atmospheric CO2 increase.

It’s at this point that his analysis goes horribly wrong. He detrends the CO2 and 13CO2 data, then estimates their rates of change, produces a similar scatterplot, and regresses them against each other.


Now, when we look at the ratio of these inter-annual signals like we did from the trends in Fig. 3, we get the relationship seen in Fig. 6.

Significantly, note that the ratio of C13 variability to CO2 variability is EXACTLY THE SAME as that seen in the trends!

BOTTOM LINE: If the C13/C12 relationship during NATURAL inter-annual variability is the same as that found for the trends, how can people claim that the trend signal is MANMADE??

The argument is a logical fallacy. But it’s nowhere near as embarrassing as the mathematical fallacy. Let A be the rate of change of CO2:

A = d(CO_2)/dt.

Let B be the rate of change of 13CO2:

B = d(^{13}CO_2)/dt.

Spencer’s figure 3 is a scatterplot of A against B. Now detrend the CO2 data; this will produce a new data set (call it x), which is the original data minus a straight line:

x = (CO_2) - \alpha t - a,

where t is the time, and \alpha and a are constants. Likewise detrend the 13CO2 data; this will produce a new data set (call it y), which is the original data minus a straight line:

y = (^{13}CO_2) - \beta t - b

where \beta and b are constants. Now compute the time derivatives of the new data sets:

dx/dt = A - \alpha,

dy/dt = B - \beta.

We see that the new time series dx/dt,dy/dt of time derivatives are equal to the old time series A,B of time derivatives, offset by constants. Spencer’s figure 6 is a scatter plot of dx/dt against dy/dt.

If we take any two time series and regress one against the other, we’ll get a slope. If we take the same two time series offset by constants and regress one against the other, we’ll get exactly the same slope. Necessarily. For Sure. Every time.

So Spencer’s “Significantly, … EXACTLY THE SAME as that seen in the trends!” is nothing more than an obvious consequence of the way he analyzed the data. It’s not “significant,” and it means absolutely nothing except that Spencer really doesn’t understand what he’s doing.

We’ve put huge quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere from fossil-fuel burning, and atmospheric CO2 has increased. In fact, the atmospheric increase has only been about half the anthropogenic output, so not only are our emissions responsible for atmospheric increase, they’re increasing some other carbon reservoir as well. The evidence is pretty strong that most of the rest of the fossil-fuel CO2 is going into the oceans. As a result, not only is the atmospheric 13C fraction decreasing, so is the ocean 13C fraction. If atmospheric CO2 increase is coming from the oceans as Spencer claims, the how is it possible for both the atmosphere and the ocean to show declining \delta13C?

Maybe Spencer’s most foolish statement about the source of CO2 increase comes not from this post but from his previous one:

Let’s say the oceans are producing an extra 1 unit of CO2, mankind is producing 1 unit, and nature is absorbing an extra 1.5 units. Then we get the situation we have today, with CO2 rising at about 50% the rate of human emissions.

Ignore, if you can stretch the truth that far, that there’s no evidence whatever that the oceans are a net producer of atmospheric CO2 but there’s very strong evidence they’re actually absorbing. Just follow this logic, and take away the “mankind is producing 1 unit” — what’s the result? CO2 would be decreasing by 0.5 units. Result: without human emissions CO2 wouldn’t be increasing.

Claims that atmospheric CO2 increase isn’t due to fossil-fuel burning are about as dumb as it gets. The destructive aspect is that here we are wasting time on a subject about which there is no doubt. Seriously: we might as well be discussing whether the earth is flat. Maybe that’s the entire point: make those who want to increase knowledge about global warming waste their time rather than share important, and correct, information.

This really is a litmus test. I’m not the least bit interested in hearing your arguments about how maybe, just maybe, the increase is coming from the oceans or soda pop or space aliens so I should keep an open mind about it. Keeping an open mind doesn’t mean removing your brain.

Below, comment #50 (not #1), which reflects an opinion on some of the odd psychology of the deniers (and now I have to look up "Dunning-Kruger effect" -- more on that later; ok, I googled it, and it explains a lot, see below the Marion Delgado comment):

    Okay, at some point even the sincere valid scientists clinging to the phlogiston are no longer going to be respected by their colleagues. So, no, they are not 100% people who are whores, liars, cranks, crackpots, out of their disciplines, over the hill, etc. etc.

    But it’s definitely approaching 99% of them, and since their numbers are approaching 1% of the relevant scientists, not sure why anyone should consider the 1% of the 1% that’s sincere, qualified, and actually doubts AGW to a strong degree. They’re a tiny and aging handful, and when they pass on, honest and skilled denialism on AGW will die with them.

    Moreover, science is not settled by the three-ring-circus that is a debate with glib charlatans like Monckton or Crichton. The climate denialism faithful are too lacking in education and fundamental scientific understanding to understand climate change themselves, so they turn to authorities, but unfortunately, they don’t even have the level of competence or discernment to pick real authorities, choosing science fiction writers, bored useless British royalty, and TV weathermen over atmospheric scientists; and they have fixed, obsessive delusions, for instance that (mostly “capitalist” but to a bizarre extreme) economics should determine science, or politics actually determines science. But whenever those things happen, that’s a failure of science.

    So the underlying problem is a lack of understanding of science coupled with a very bad Dunning-Kruger effect.


OK, this explains the incredible performance of Roy Spencer during the Boxer hearing this week -- he seemed like a little kid, squirming and using all kinds of body language to show his disagreements and frustration, odd tones of voice not suitable for such a hearing, which displayed his lack of maturity. I have often noticed that the behavior of the crowd of commenters on the blogs like climateaudit resembles that of 12-year-old boys (sorry, men, but girls have a different type of behavior that does not describe what I have seen on the denialist blogs).

The Dunning-Kruger effect is the phenomenon wherein people who have little knowledge (or skill) tend to think they know more (or have more skill) than they do, while others who have much more knowledge tend to think that they know less. Dunning and Kruger were awarded a 2000 Ig Nobel prize for their work.

The phenomenon was demonstrated in a series of experiments performed by Justin Kruger and David Dunning, both of Cornell University. Their results were published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in December 1999.[2]

Kruger and Dunning noted a number of previous studies which tend to suggest that in skills as diverse as reading comprehension, operating a motor vehicle, and playing chess or tennis, "ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge" (as Charles Darwin put it).[3] They hypothesized that with a typical skill which humans may possess in greater or lesser degree,

  1. Incompetent individuals tend to overestimate their own level of skill.
  2. Incompetent individuals fail to recognize genuine skill in others.
  3. Incompetent individuals fail to recognize the extremity of their inadequacy.
  4. If they can be trained to substantially improve their own skill level, these individuals can recognize and acknowledge their own previous lack of skill.
